Last October my husband, Joe, and I went on the trip of a lifetime to England & Italy. We were able to visit the hometown where my father was born and raised and meet family of mine for the first time! Joe and I flew into Rome, rented a car, and drove to Pescara. We were also able to visit, Rome, Florence, Chianti Region, Sienna, and Saint Francis of Assisi. The scenery was breathtaking. We had to stop a few times to fill up with gas, and had our first experience with prosciutto and mozzarell at the gas stations. Who knew the simplicity of a sandwhich made with fresh bread, prosciutto, and mozzarella would be so delightful! At every restaurant and hotel they had prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella. When we were in Pescara, they had markets with garlic, peppers, and prosciutto hanging out to dry. The sea salt in the air helps add flavor as it cured. We ate so much prosciutto you would have thought we would be sick of it. It’s been 7 months and you can find prosciutto in our fridge at any given time. Right now we have 6 different kinds of prosciutto just waiting to be eaten. #noms
Look at how beautiful this prosciutto is. It is deep red and perfectly cured. It was love at first sight.
I made it my mission over the last several months to find prosciutto here in Saint Louis that made my mouth as happy as it was in Italy.
I have tasted prosciutto from Volpi that I bought from DiGregorio’s, Whole Foods Galleria, Boars Head that I bought from Schnucks, Viviano’s, and Global Foods.
My favorite prosciutto in order:
Viviano’s
Whole Foods
Global Foods
DiGregorio’s
Volpi
Boar’s Head
Whole Foods prosciutto is from Saint Daniele. It is $25.99 a lb, but worth every single penny. Viviano’s is prosciutto from Parma, Italy and is $15.99 a lb.
My least favorite was Boar’s Head (who guessed I would say that?).
So if you are looking for a delish charcuterie board or a simple prosciutto and mozz antipasto, head over to Viviano’s or Whole Foods and stock up!

Until my next Italian adventure in St. Louis,
