Joe and I had been wanting to try Blood and Sand for several months, but in order to eat there you have to have a membership. We never looked into how much or what was involved in joining. The menu is fancy, the pictures online are gorgeous, and we assumed it was going to be out of our price range (which it was not). Then a few weeks ago a good friend of mine asked us to join him and his boyfriend for dinner there! Adam and John are members, and as a member you can invite your friends anytime you want!
I could hardly contain my excitement!!! So we joined Adam and John for a double date the following Monday! I psyched myself out after looking at the menu. It had Spanish baby octopus, rabbit feet, and rainbow trout on the menu. I had no idea what I was in for and knew it would be an adventurous evening of good eats!
It is located downtown Saint Louis, and behind apartment buildings in an alleyway. We drove by it several times before realizing we were there. They do not have any signs with their name on it ( visible signs at least lol). We drove by the third time and saw a Tessla parked on the street and thought to each other it had to be close. The windows had their logo etched on them! We found it!!
So when you go here, look for their logo in the windows, and a red awning where the entrance is in an alleyway!
It is a very chic restaurant. I loved the chandeliers, door frames and windows hung for decoration, and red leather couches for seating. It feels very swanky and classy but casual and comfy at the same time. You could come here dressed to the nines or in jeans.
We started out with cocktails, and were given some truffled tater tots with parmesan cheese to start. They were crazy good. Imagine taking a bite of a crunchy shell with a creamy mashed potato inside. The cocktail I ordered was ridiculous, and was called Something In The Water. It had gin, lemon, lime, grapefruit, honey, herbs, lavender infused blueberries, and was served in a cool as heck looking class. It was so good, John ordered it for his next drink. Joe ordered the Blood and Sand (their signature libation). It had scotch, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and cherry liquor. Adam and John both got white wine!
For appetizers we started with Baked Feta,Orecchiette, and Asparagus with Avocado. The feta was baked in a Piquillo pepper with basil and seasoning and served with baguette. Our Orecchiette (it’s Italian for little ears, in case you didn’t know) was served with chanterelles, beef tendon, basil and preserved lemon. The Orecchiette was everyones favorite. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the flavor was incredible!
Our server was very attentive, replaced our silverware with every dish, and had great recommendations for our drinks and dinner.While we were waiting for our entrée to arrive, we discussed the membership for Blood and Sand. They are completely booked for the full membership, which includes being able to eat there 7 days a week, and it is 3 to 4 month waiting list. The partial membership, allows you to eat there Monday-Thursday, is only $15 a month, gives you three weekends a year, and your birthday or special occasions.
For our entrées we had Grilled Lamb Rack, Amish Chicken (2), and the Wagyu Ribeye Steak.
The Amish Chicken had hen of woods mushroom in a truffle Madeira sauce. It was very tasty, and what My friend John and I ordered. It had a chicken thigh confit. It was very tender and flavorful.
Joe ordered the Rack of Lamb. Let me just tell you how much I love mint jelly. This dish came with clear mint jelly!!! We were all mind blown how delicious the mint jelly was. The lamb was cooked perfectly and was devoured.
My friend Adam ordered the Steak. You can’t go wrong with steak! It was served with oxtail gratin and creamed spinach. I couldn’t get enough of the spinach, it was delicious!! Adam let me finish it for him.
During dinner we caught up on life and John and I became best friends! We are both Italian and were sharing family recipes and our love of wine with each other! Adam and John also shared with us their 8 course meal and cocktail pairing they had at Blood and Sand that is served by the owner. Look how cute this is! It is a little tucked away two chair area that overlooks the kitchen. It sounded dreamy and we cannot wait to have this experience in our future
Our evening would not have complete with our dessert. John ordered us a Madeira Port Wine to drink. It was heavenly and had hints of caramel with every sip. It was the best port I have ever had.
We shared blueberry sorbet, and Panna Cotta with tapioca pearls. The desserts were a very refreshing way to end our evening.
Our reservations were at 7:30, and we did not leave Blood and Sand until 11:00. It was an absolutely perfect evening of delightful conversation, wonderfully prepared dishes and drinks, fantastic service, and an atmosphere I wish I could have with every meal. It was 100% worth every penny, and should be added to your list of places to go and dine! If you are given the chance to go with a member, but are nervous because of the menu, don’t be. They have something you could eat and you never know, you might find a new favorite dish!
