Almost a year ago my husband stumbled upon an episode on the Travel Channel all about English cuisine. He knew I would love it, and recorded it for me. As we sat watching it I was brought to tears ( what can I say, food makes me emotional lol) because it reminded me so much of my family and the delicious Sunday family meal ( Roast Dinner) we would share. Roast Restaurant ( they make more than just roast dinner) was on this episode. It inspired us to not only try it when we visited London, but to make super large yorkshire puddings like theirs too.
Our last night in Europe was spent in London. My cousin (more like my sister xo) and her husband ( my best mate), Joe and I spent the evening pub hopping, having the most fabulous dinner experience at Roast, and walking the streets near London Tower Bridge. It is tucked away on a side street, and we thought we would never find it. Then I looked up at this beautiful building with windows everywhere and saw Roast’s sign lit up. I got sooooo excited and ran to it.
It is gorgeous inside. It has a very classy feel to it, clean with lots of white everywhere, and light colored floors and sort of disturbing paintings on the walls. The paintings did their job though as they started conversation!
We started out with a bottle of Prosecco, so we could cheers to being in Europe, being together as a family, and gratefulness we all felt.
We did not get appetizers since we knew our main meals were going to be incredibly filling and we still had some drinking to do. It was so tempting as they had oysters, crab, scallops, scottish egg, and Welsh Black beef ( just to name a few) and more on the menu. We ordered a bottle of red italian wine, and they had it decanting while we were waiting for our food. A sommelier picked the wine for us. He was really lovely. It only took him 3 years to become a sommelier.
Joe and I ordered the Roasted East Anglian Chateaubriand with beef roasties in dripping and yorkshire pudding (Roast Dinner for Two). We had our heart and mind set on this entree, as it was featured on the travel channel and it’s my favorite Sunday supper. I am having a hard time describing how good it was. Too be honest, we were not expecting it to to be thaaaaat amazing. We thought it would be delicious, especially after watching the episode on tv, but it really was just wonderful.
The dinner only came with meat, potatoes and yorkshire pudding. The veggies were ordered separate. Look at the size of this yorkshire pudding!!! The tenderloin filet was cooked to perfection. It was juicy, fell apart with each bite and the horse raddish blue cheese topping they served it with it was really great. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. They are cooked in the beef drippings, so flavorful. You can probably tell how much I loved this meal, but in case you can’t. I LOVED this meal. I not only finished my entire dish, but for once I also helped my husband finish his. I could not get enough of it.
Mark ordered the Wick’s Manor pork belly with mash potatoes and could not get over the flavor. He said he had never tasted anything like it. When we first got there, Mark was a little shocked with the prices, as it is a little bit more expensive than your average restaurant. Half-way through his meal he just looked up at everyone and smiled. At this point he didn’t mind the price of his meal. The crispy edges of the pork belly were tasty and perfectly salty.
Claire ordered the calves liver. She could not get over how delicious it was. The meat melted in her mouth and was succulent.
We saved the best for last. I can’t even handle myself even typing about it. We ordered Stick date pudding with clotted cream. Just look at this picture. It was one of those dessert that just has you smiling from ear to ear after eating it. Since I can’t fly to England and have this dessert whenever I want to, I am going to attempt to make this at home once I find all the ingredients I will need.
To summarize our experience, if you are in London and don’t go eat at Roast it would be a huge mistake!
Until our next international adventure,
Lisa Annie
XOXO
P.S. If you have ever been here or plan to now, I would love to hear about your experience.
