The Kitchen Sink

Joe and I had a date night to see the new Hunger Games movie, which btw was amazing! We just love Jennifer Lawrence.
I was online googling different types of restaurants in the area and found a place called the Kitchen Sink, a cajun/creole restaurant. My husband is a big fan of cajun food; because it is not my favorite style of cooking, we don’t go to these types of restaurants too often.

Since I have been expanding my taste buds, I have become more adventurous with my food. I thought we would have some cajun food tonight. Plus the name of the place sounded fun, and it is relatively close to us.

The lobby had video games in it, and the restaurant was very open and inviting. I liked the lighting, it was bright! They had motivational artwork on the walls, with sayings such as: to the world you are one person, but to one person you are their world. We were two of four people in the restaurant; before we left, a few other couples had came in.
We sat at the bar, which we like to do because it feels more relaxed and informal to us.

The bartender Jessica was really nice. She introduced herself and was chatty! I enjoy having a chatty waitress or bartender, as I am chatty myself.

I had a chocolate martini – they called Muddy Mississippi, which was also a drink of the day. I had a sip and thought it was ok, but something was missing. I asked Jessica what chocolate liquor they used, and it did not have any chocolate liquor in it. She said it was too expensive and until the martini is ordered more frequently, they would not have any in stock. It had Pinnacle Whipped vodka, Kahlua, and some chocolate syrup.

We were going to order oysters for a starter, but they did not have any. Jessica told us they were not in season and too expensive. They were in the menu at market price, so we were perplexed at the lack of preparedness we noticed already. First with the drink special and now the oysters. The couple next to us also ordered the oysters, and were not able to have them.

What kind of cheese ain’t yo cheese?… not yo Cheese haha. You can thank my husband for the this joke. He is funny. We decided to order the nachos as our starter. It had ballpark nacho cheese on it. The nachos had diced cajun chicken on it and was topped with fried jalapeños. The fried jalapenos lost some of their flavor and were more mild than normal jalapeños. They were basic nachos,we weren’t disappointed, but not overly impressed by them either.

They had fun names for their entrees. The Doc Holliday,which was a coffee rubbed Ribeye, and an entree called IDK, just to name a few. The IDK is chef’s choice, and not chef’s pic of the day- just whatever he/she feels like making each time it is ordered. It is $14 and no refunds.

Joe ordered the Shrimp and Grits. I was feeling risqué and ordered the IDK. The chef made me cajun smothered chicken over rice with potatoes. The chicken was tender and it had good flavor. I was really hoping for something creative and out of my comfort zone, like a shepards pie with seafood, or something more unique. Joe thought his meal was decent. Every bite he tasted something different, as if the sauce was not blended or mixed well enough. It had the consistency of a tomato soup. I had a bite and thought it was pretty tasty, but Joe is really the connoisseur of Shrimp and Grits, If it is on the menu- he orders it.

We had a nice time. Jessica, the bartender, was lovely, and we left with full bellies. We are grateful for the chance to try The Kitchen Sink, and other local St. Louis restaurants. I am looking forward to trying other cajun/creole restaurants now that this cat is out of the bag ;).
